How You Can Help

and

The Purple Star Development Plan

Purple Star Veterans and Families is being formed to strengthen the safety net of support for Veterans and their immediate and extended families members as they transition from military to civilian life.

Prevention, early intervention and a rapid response network of care

Strengthening the Safety Net:

  • Our purpose is to better connect the community of Veterans and their spouses but to place additional focus on their extended family members, friends and co-workers so that we can connect families in need.
  • Parents and Grandparentsplay a special role in the long-term homecoming process but are often under-served and under-informed. We intend to build a national network of these important family members.

Suicide Prevention:

  • Provide awareness to existing prevention resources
  • Bereavement support for families of fallen Veterans from suicide, motorcycle and vehicle accidents. Provide awareness to existing bereavement resources and to create on-line and in-person support to fill the gaps in outreach.

Rapid Response Network of Care:

  • By strengthening the safety net of immediate and extended family member PSVF hopes to identify families in crisis more quickly to provide immediate resources and assistance.

Goal

To Be  a Congressionally Chartered, national organization (Purple Star) that provides resources and outreach to Veterans and their families after military service is completed, during their mandatory “Inactive Ready Reserve” period and through the reintegration challenges of homecoming.

  • What is  Congressionally Chartered :  A law passed by congress that states the mission, authority and activities of a group ,Just like Blue Star Moms and Gold Star moms
  • Why is it important
  • We believe that having a Congressional Chartered will help us go beyond boundaries of long standing Veterans organizations.
    • Example: The American Legion and VFW have many programs for today’s Veterans but are separate membership organizations.
    • We believe these organizations will be open to working with us because our intention is to insure that our homecoming sons and daughters are long-term members. When Veterans do eventually ask for help, we realize they will want to talk with fellow Veterans and we get this. These long standing organization are important and stand ready to assist when asked.

Purple Star Veterans and Families is starting with three pilot cities: San Diego, Peoria Illinois,  Aspen Colorado

  • The first stage will be a media campaign to distribute flags and bumper stickers to bring awareness to the needs of homecoming and a national movement called Purple Star Veterans and Families.
  • The second stage will be to focus on building the on-line community to better connect Veterans, and their immediate and extended family members. Eventually, monthly community pot-luck events will be scheduled to better connect Purple Star families.
  • The third stage will be to formally establish The Purple Star Radio Network to keep the homecoming community in touch with what is important for us to know such as where to find services and what collective needs to address.
